Darjeeling is a town in West Bengal, in the Himalayan foothills. Once a summer resort for the British Raj elite, it remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, or “Toy Train”. This is the land of the muscatel flavoured Darjeeling tea, revered by connoisseurs across the globe as the champagne of teas – the Darjeeling area is famed for the distinctive black tea grown on plantations that dot its surrounding slopes. While here you can visit a Tea Estate to observe the tea manufacturing process. Other attractions include the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park which has attracted world attention by successfully breeding endangered species like the snow leopard and red panda, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute which maintains a fascinating museum of memorabilia. At the north point of Darjeeling is India’s oldest passenger ropeway, connecting Darjeeling with Singla bazaar on the little Ranjeet river at the bottom of the valley. Also worth a visit is the Peace Pagoda, which stands as a symbol of spirituality and peace. Make a pre-dawn visit to Tiger Hill to watch the sunrise over Mt Kanchenjunga- a truly enchanting sight.
