Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka, set on a plateau with mountains around it – these emerald slopes are home to rolling tea plantations and a biodiverse rainforest. At the heart of Kandy is scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), around which the town revolves. The hills and mountains provide ample hiking and wildlife-watching opportunities, while the lake is a beautiful spot to stroll. Kandy is known for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession. the famous temple that houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha himself! Just outside Kandy lie the verdant Peradeniya Botanic Gardens – a spot once earmarked exclusively for Kandyan Royalty, but now open to the public.
