Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal. Famous for its Durbar Square with its old Royal Palace (Hanuman Dhoka), Kathmandu is a treasure trove of beautiful old monuments – a diverse historic city with breathtaking Newari architecture and centuries old Hindu and Buddhist religious sites. Rejoicing in its ancient traditions, Kathmandu is blessed by the presence of the Living Goddess Kumari – myriad colourful processions mark a variety spiritual celebrations here. Spectacular sights in Kathmandu include the Swayambhunath Stupa, the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu valley. Its lofty white dome and glittering golden spire are visible for many miles and from all sides of the valley. Pashupatinath Temple is regarded as the most sacred temple of Hindu Lord Shiva in the world – its existence dates back to 400 A.D. The richly-ornamented pagoda houses the sacred linga or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. The monumental Boudhanath temple, a Tibetan Buddhist monument, is one of the largest stupas in the world.
