One of South India’s great temple towns, Madurai in Tamilnadu is synonymous with the celebrated Meenakshi Temple. Situated on the banks of river Vaigai, Madurai has a rich Tamilian cultural heritage passed on from more than 2500 years ago. The metropolis traded with ancient Rome and was a great capital long before the current capital of Tamilnadu, Chennai, came into existence. Its skyline is dominated by the 14 colorful gopurams (gateway towers) of Meenakshi Amman Temple. Covered in bright carvings of Hindu gods, the Dravidian-style temple is a major pilgrimage site. Meenakshi Tirukalyanam, the 10-day annual festival celebrated during April-May attracts over a million visitors. Jallikattu, the taming of bulls on the run, is a popular event on the same lines as the Pamplona Bull Run sport in Spain.
