Pondicherry in Tamilnadu is referred to by names such as ‘India’s Little France’ and ‘The French Riviera of the East’. This territory was under French rule for around 280 years. Parts of the city still retain a French flavor, seen in the colonial mansions, beautiful boulevards, promenades, and street names on signboards. The world-renowned Shri Aurobindo Ashram was founded here in the year 1926, by Shri Aurobindo, a revolutionary turned Yogi from Bengal along with The Mother (Mira Alfassa), a French painter and sculptor. The ashram attracts people from all over the world. Pondicherry boasts a beautiful beach promenade. Close to Pondicherry is the township of Auroville… recognized as the first and only internationally endorsed ongoing experiment for the cultural, environmental, social and spiritual needs of mankind. At the very centre of Auroville is the ‘soul of the city’, the Matrimandir (Temple of the Mother).
