Kerala’s largest fort has a rich history. You can stand at the spot where Tipu Sultan’s soldiers defended Bekal and marvel at the sheer scale of the 40-acre fortification. A giant observatory stands in its centre and offers great views of the sea into the horizon. Completed by Sivappa Nayaka in the 17th century, the fort has withstood the test of time. Interestingly, much of the monument is in contact with water, and appears to be emerging from the sea. Its battlements were specially designed to keep attackers from the sea at bay.
