The larger-than-life City Palace Udaipur exemplifies grandeur and opulence on a truly lavish scale. Construction of the palace started under the aegis of Maharana Udai Singh II and successive rulers kept adding to the original plan. From a vantage point that overlooks the Lake Pichola, the City Palace is magnificently situated. In fact the many palace towers, terraces and balconies are designed to enjoy the lake views. The complex comprises a network of several palaces, and two of these – the Shiv Niwas Palace and Fatehprakash Palace – are now heritage hotels. The plush interiors boast of Belgian crystal chandeliers, gold leaf trims, and spectacular inlay work. In case you didn’t know, the James Bond movie Octopussy is shot in the palace interiors.
