The golden ramparts of the Jaisalmer Fort dominate the Jaisalmer skyline –it’s an almost unreal, Arabian Nights kind of backdrop that’s truly magical. This massive citadel is buttressed by 99 bastions and covers a massive area of several square kilometres. When you walk into the fort complex, time stands still. This is a ‘living fort’, which means it has been inhabited generation after generation for over 800 years. The little streets and by lanes pulsate with the energy of day-to-day life. And yet, the sense of history is all pervasive. Built in mid 11th century by Rajput Rawal Jaisal, the old fort still holds all the architectural treasures of days gone by.
