Enroute from Nuwara Eliya to Bentota, take a break in Kitulgala, viewing beautiful landscapes and waterfalls, along the Kelani River. This pretty town, in the wet zone rainforest area, is a base for white-water rafting, which starts a few kilometres upstream. The Kelani river is wide at Kitulgala, but it is shallow, so in the drier months it provides a safe and attractive place to swim. The Academy Award-winning film ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’ was filmed on the Kelani near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge. A gastronomical delicacy to sample here is the local dessert, a kind of yogurt made of creamy fermented buffalo milk, topped with generous dollops of reddish brown Kitul palm honey. The sap of the Kitul Palm Tree is used to make local treacle, toddy and jaggery.
The pristine Bentota Beach, located close to Galle, sits on Sri Lanka’s South West coast, and is one of the most picturesque spots in the country. The beach stretches northwards, where it turns into sandy strip known as Paradise Island, parallel to Bentota Lagoon.
