If the sheer might of a ruling dynasty had to be embodied in stone, the Mehrangarh Fort stands as a shining example. It was built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, chief of the Rathore clan. Located high upon a hilltop, the Mehrangarh Fort has walls that rise almost 120 feet in height, and are several feet thick. These massive ramparts were more than adequate cover for the many palaces and temples inside. The exquisite Moti Mahal, or Pearl Palace, Phool Mahal – Flower Palace, and the Sheesh Mahal, or Palace of Mirrors, are some of the brilliantly decorated royal residences. Within the fort is a well-curated museum, displaying royal palanquins, cradles, musical instruments, clothing and furniture.
