100 kms drive

Set high in the ranges of the Western Ghats in Kerala, Thekkady is home to Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. The sanctuary features a picturesque lake at its heart, formed with the building of a dam in 1895. It meanders around the contours of the wooded hills, providing a permanent source of water for the local wildlife. Though it is a Tiger Reserve, it is a wonderful spot to view the elephants in the act of ablution and playfulness by the Periyar Lake – they can be seen bathing and swimming here. Enjoy a Periyar Lake Boat Ride to view wildlife at close quarters. Thekkady is renowned for its spice plantations – take a Spice Plantation Walk in the fragrant spice gardens and learn how everyday spices are cultivated.

Alleppey, known as ‘theVenice of the East’, has a large network of canals that meander through the town and surrounding villages – the Snake Boat Race held every year in August in the backwaters is a major attraction. The Kerala backwaters are a vital waterway for the transport of goods, people and their produce, and are often the only link between isolated villages and crowded towns. Board your houseboat and for an Overnight Backwaters Cruise, gliding through palm fringed canals, verdant paddy fields and tiny hamlets.

Alleppey to Cochin will be approximately 60 kms drive.
